Description

R3-MYDAS is a Horizon Europe project that aims to accelerate the manufacturing industry's transition toward sustainable and circular value chains. A key aspect of this effort is the implementation of Sustainability by Design (SbD) principles to ensure that innovative circular processes generate environmental, economic, and social benefits. In this context, the project encompasses three industrial demo cases, with a focus here on the oil & gas sector’s crankshaft component.

Traditional linear value chains in the oil & gas industry often lead to component disposal when failures occur, generating significant environmental and economic costs. The R3- MYDAS project proposes an innovative remanufacturing approach for crankshafts, enabling repair and reintegration during maintenance and end-of-life. To achieve this, worn areas of the crankshaft are scanned to create a 3D model, guiding the design of the required clad layer, which is then applied using laser cladding. While this innovative process restores components to near-original specifications, improving precision, costefficiency, and environmental performance, understanding its broader impact requires a structured evaluation.

To this end, an SbD assessment has been conducted for the crankshaft demo case, focusing on environmental and socio-economic dimensions to ensure that the remanufacturing strategy is both sustainable and socially responsible.
