Description

This publicly released dataset provides a global assessment of marine heatwave-induced coral reef thermal stress metrics at the reef-pixel scale (~25 km) from 1982 to 2024. It improves understanding of how climate change affects coral reef ecosystems by characterizing marine heatwaves and related thermal stress across more than four decades. Jupyter notebooks and data to reproduce the figures in the submitted manuscript "Global Coral Reef Thermal Stress: Patterns, Trends, and Emerging Regimes" in the Environmental Research Letters by Busireddy et al. (2025) are provided here.

Technical info

When running the code in a Jupyter Notebook, users will be prompted to enter the directory path to the CSV dataset file (e.g., Global_coral_reefs_thermal_stress_metrics_1982_2024.csv). After typing the path, press Enter to continue.
If the input is left blank, the script automatically uses the current working directory.
