MANAGEMENT OF OBSTRUCTIVE SLEEP APNEA SYNDROME BY THE DENTIST: A STRATEGY FOR THE PREVENTION OF ALZHEIMER'S
Description
This study highlights the role of the dentist in the management of
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) and its potential contribution to the
prevention of Alzheimer's Disease (AD). A literature review of the Scielo, Scopus,
and PubMed databases revealed that OSAS, through mechanisms such as
intermittent hypoxia, chronic inflammation, and glymphatic dysfunction, promotes
the formation of beta-amyloid plaques and impairs sleep. Devices such as CPAPs
and intraoral appliances (IOAs) improve sleep quality and protect cognition. Based
on this study, it can be concluded that the dentist can assist in the treatment of OSAS
and, in doing so, play a strategic role in the prevention of AD.
