In Sub-Saharan Africa, the evolution of cataract surgery has progressed from traditional techniques like couching and intracapsular cataract extraction (ICCE), to extracapsular cataract extraction (ECCE), manual small incision cataract surgery (MSICS), and now to phacoemulsification. However, adopting phacoemulsification in the region is met with unique challenges, including resource constraints, limited access to training, and patient-related factors. Objective: This guide aims to equip novice surgeons with practical skills, techniques, and insights necessary for mastering phacoemulsification, addressing the complexities, common pitfalls, and key strategies for successful transition within Sub-Saharan Africa. Methodology: The authors documented their structured training journey in transitioning from MSICS to phacoemulsification.
