THE ROLE OF A HEALTHY DIET IN SUPPORTING CHILDREN'S GROWTH AND PREVENTING NON-COMMUNICABLE DISEASES
Authors/Creators
Description
A consistently healthy diet throughout the life course helps prevent malnutrition in all its forms, as well as various non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and conditions. However, the rise in processed food production, swift urban development, and evolving lifestyles has caused dietary patterns to change. People's diets now include greater amounts of foods that are high in energy, fats, free sugars, or salt/sodium. Additionally, many individuals do not consume sufficient quantities of fruits, vegetables, and dietary fiber sources like whole grains. During the first two years of a child’s life, proper nutrition supports healthy growth and enhances cognitive development. It lowers the risk of becoming overweight or obese, as well as developing NCDs later in life. The principles of nutrition for kids are the same as those for adults. Everyone requires the same kinds of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, protein, and fat. However, children require varying quantities of specific nutrients as they grow at different ages.
