Weekly Ingathering or 'Passover-thanksgiving'? Reading 1 Cor. 16:2 Through the Lens of the Tanach

Authors/Creators

Description

In this paper I revisit the puzzling phrase κατὰ μίαν σαββάτου in 1 Corinthians 16:2 and ask whether our translation and liturgical traditions have muted its original resonance. While most modern versions render it “on the first day of every week,” I will show that the Greek grammar and the history of interpretation do not in themselves require this reading. Read through the lens of the Tanakh and its spring festival calendar, I will argue instead that Paul’s wording points to the Omer period between Pesach and Shavuot, and that his instructions about the collection participate in a much richer firstfruits theology than is usually recognized.
