Internet of Things and Edge Computing: Concepts, System Layers, and Engineering Challenges

Authors/Creators

  • 1. Technology Delivery

Description

Internet of Things deployments generate continuous data streams from distributed sensors and actuators. Handling this volume solely in remote clouds introduces delay, bandwidth usage, and privacy exposure. Edge computing addresses these issues by executing selected workloads near devices. This paper provides a concise examination of IoT and edge computing, outlines a practical layered architecture, and explains the flow of data and control across devices, edge infrastructure, and cloud services. The paper also highlights design considerations related to latency, resource limits, security, and interoperability. Current application trends and open research problems in AI-enabled edge systems and federated learning are discussed. Index Terms—IoT, Edge Computing, Fog Systems, Distributed Processing, Cyber-Physical Systems.
