Re-envisioning the Urnfield Transition: Terramare Dynamics and the Tumulus Bronze Age Collapse.
Authors/Creators
Description
The transition from the Middle Bronze Age Tumulus cultures to the Late Bronze Age Urnfield cultures across Central Europe represents a pivotal and complex period, often characterized by significant shifts in funerary rites, settlement patterns, and material culture. Concurrently, the Terramare culture of the Po Valley in northern Italy experienced a dramatic and widespread collapse. This paper proposes a re-evaluation of the Urnfield transition, arguing that the dynamics of the Terramare culture, particularly its rapid demographic growth, subsequent societal collapse, and potential population displacement, played a more profound and causative role than previously acknowledged in shaping the emergence and spread of Urnfield phenomena. Drawing upon a synthesis of archaeological evidence, including settlement archaeology, ceramic typologies, metalwork analysis, and paleoclimatic data, we explore the chronological synchronicity and potential causal links between the Terramare demise and the development of distinct Urnfield traits. We hypothesize that environmental stressors, coupled with internal social instability within the Terramare system, led to its sudden abandonment, triggering migrations that impacted the adjacent Tumulus Bronze Age communities. These interactions are proposed to have been a significant catalyst for the adoption of new social structures, economic practices, and notably, the widespread shift to cremation and urn burial that defines the Urnfield cultural horizon. This re-envisioning aims to provide a more integrated narrative for understanding one of the most transformative periods in prehistoric Europe, moving beyond regional specificities to embrace broader pan-European interactions.
