Description
The construction industry faces increasing pressure to adopt sustainable practices in response to environmental concerns and resource scarcity. Upgraded, repurposed, and reused building components (URRBC), especially those with enhanced technical features and functionalities, offer a promising solution to mitigate the environmental impact of construction activities by diverting waste from landfills and reducing the demand for virgin materials.
The applicability of upgraded building products is hindered by various bottlenecks, including lack of information, inadequate traceability, regulatory challenges, limited collaboration, and economic concerns. A CP-IM platform addresses these barriers by providing a centralized repository of information, ensuring enhanced traceability, facilitating material upgrades, supporting compliance, promoting collaboration, offering real-time data and analytics, creating economic incentives, and providing educational resources.
By meeting the specific needs of all relevant stakeholders, a CP-IM platform can significantly enhance the adoption and marketability of upgraded building products, fostering a more sustainable construction industry. Based on this exhaustive desk-research into bottlenecks, the concept of providing a systemic, trust-building approach with logical information about technical performance obligations and options is essential to overcome the quality bias associated with commodity products.
This deliverable examines the concept of URRBC, their environmental benefits, and strategies for integrating them into construction projects. Case studies and examples demonstrate their potential and illustrate how this sustainable approach can transform the construction industry.
