Description
The work entitled “Determining the Classification Standards of Arabic Texts for Non-Native Arabic Speakers According to CEFR: Reference Guide (AMS Tool)” presents a rigorously developed scientific and practical framework for the classification of written Arabic texts in accordance with learners’ proficiency levels. The project establishes a comprehensive set of standards that align with the CEFR while being carefully adapted to the structural and linguistic specificities of the Arabic language.
To ensure methodological precision and scholarly reliability, the project employed the Delphi Technique, engaging 59 experts from 14 countries in a structured, multi-stage consultation process.
The resulting AMS Matrix extends beyond the six conventional CEFR levels (A1–C2) by introducing additional intermediate sub-levels (A1+, A2+, B1+, B2+, C1+). These refinements reflect the inherently gradual nature of Arabic language acquisition and address the wide proficiency gaps observed between the original CEFR bands. The model underwent empirical validation through pilot applications to established Arabic instructional series—most notably Al-‘Arabiyya Bayna Yadayk and Al-Lisan—demonstrating its coherence, robustness, and applicability across diverse instructional contexts.
The project further produced two dedicated digital platforms: one for comprehensive documentation and another for the interactive implementation of the AMS tool, thereby facilitating its adoption by educational institutions, publishers, and researchers.
In essence, the AMS Standards offer a unified, evidence-based benchmark that enhances the selection of Arabic texts, informs curriculum development, and contributes to more effective and motivating Arabic-language learning experiences for non-native speakers.
