Description
Abstract (English)
From Colonial Layout to Modernity: Visual Archaeological Analysis of Riobamba, Ecuador, Based on Historical Photographic and Cartographic Records from 1797 to 1920. This paper examines the urban transformation of Riobamba, Ecuador, from its destruction by the 1797 earthquake and its relocation to the Tapi plain in 1799 to the early decades of the 20th century. The main objective is to demonstrate how this Andean city articulated tradition and modernity, integrating the colonial layout inherited from the Laws of the Indies with republican innovations and modernization processes. The methodology is based on urban archaeology and the archaeology of the image, considering historical photographs and old plans as cultural artifacts. Six material and visual records were analyzed: the Riobamba School and Hospital, the Bellavista Arch, the Cathedral and the Municipality, the Maldonado School, the San Felipe School, and the topographical map of the old city in order to identify continuities, adaptations, and ruptures in the spatial configuration. The results show that the early modernization of Riobamba did not imply a break with the colonial order, but rather a hybrid process in which Hispanic patterns, vernacular practices, and republican aspirations coexisted. In conclusion, the city became a unique laboratory of Andean urban reinvention capable of preserving the memory of the disaster while projecting its own contextualized modernity.
