In 1995 the Greenland Home Rule Government initiated a program for regenerating fished
up scallops banks of Chlamys islandica. The intention was to remove large quantities of small
scallops from banks in areas, where the growth conditions are limited, and reintroduces them
on banks where the growth conditions are more optimal.
Investigations show that small immature scallops do benefit by being reintroduced in terms
of an increased growth rate of shell and somatic tissue. On the other hand they do suffer by
mortality rates of up to three times their normal rate in the period just next to the removal,
indicating a large sensibility for the physical stress that is imposed on them by the capture
gear.
Reintroduced adult scallops have high survival rates, but their scope for growth is small.
Judging from the investigations, the reintroduction of scallops from one bank to another will
not warrant the cost associated with such a program.
