CodeMeta: Metadata, Ontologies & Interoperability for Research Software
Description
This presentation to the EOSC Opportunity Area 2 (OA2- Metadata, Ontologies and Interoperability) introduces CodeMeta (https://codemeta.github.io/) as a community-driven solution to improve research software interoperability across the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC). It outlines the fragmented landscape of software metadata and summarises key recommendations from FAIR4RS (FAIR Principles for Research Software: https://doi.org/10.15497/RDA00068), the SIRS report (Scholarly Infrastructures for Research Software: https://data.europa.eu/doi/10.2777/28598), and the RSMD guidelines (Research Software Metadata Guidelines: https://fair-impact.github.io/RSMD-guidelines/).
CodeMeta enables alignment across repositories, registries, publishers, and archives, with a focus on how it is used on Software Heritage (SWH) (https://www.softwareheritage.org/) as a universal source code archive and metadata broker. It presents how CodeMeta integrates into SWH’s deposit workflows and how intrinsic persistent identifiers, the SWHID (Software Heritage Identifier: https://www.swhid.org/), support robust, cross-infrastructure interoperability.
The presentation calls for coordinated EOSC-wide adoption of shared standards and practices.
