Replication Data for: DOC - BEA Data by Place: County, Metro and other Local Areas

Data are from the Department of Commerce - Bureau of Economic Analysis (DOC - BEA).  The BEA website lists the following items available (quoted from the landing page (https://www.bea.gov/data/by-place-county-metro-local; accessed 11/24/2025):

• GDP by County, Metro, and Other Areas (with Industry Detail)
  GDP for local areas, with industries’ contributions to each economy

  Measure price levels that can be compared across states or metro areas
  
  

• Employment by County, Metro, and Other Areas
  Measures the number of jobs in U.S. counties and metro and nonmetro areas, with industry detail
  
  

• Economic Information for Coastal Areas
  Highlights coastal states and counties' personal incomes and earnings, and state GDP

There are multiple geographic levels available, plus multiple metrics for each category as well.  These data are for the Local listings (i.e., Counties, Metro Areas and other regional groupings).  BEA publishes data at a State and National scale as well.  For all three geographic levels (Local, State, National), there are 519 table types available, listed in the file BEA_All_Tables_Comprehensive.csv.  However, for each table, there are often multiple time periods (Annual, Quarterly) as well. The full listing of all tables contained in the entire 3 datasets is in BEA_Inventory_Report.xslx.  The latter can also be examined for files only occurring in County, Metro and other Local Areas where the “Directory” column is “BEA_CountyMetroLocal”.

Most of the data for this Localized geography are in the zip files.  Each of the categories of download have been zipped together, as well as the Python code for downloading.
