The Global Geometry of Transcendental Julia Sets
Authors/Creators
Description
This paper investigates the global geometric and topological properties of Julia sets for transcendental entire functions. In contrast to the Julia sets of rational maps, which are confined to the Riemann sphere, transcendental Julia sets exhibit a far richer and more complex variety of structures due to the presence of an essential singularity at infinity. This study focuses on the crucial role of the escaping set, the set of points that tend to infinity under iteration, in determining the overall geometry of the Julia set. For functions in the Eremenko-Lyubich class B, where the set of singular values is bounded, the Julia set is precisely the boundary of the escaping set. We explore the intricate structures that arise within these Julia sets, such as hairs, Cantor bouquets, and spiders webs, which are fundamentally linked to the dynamics on the escaping set. The paper reviews foundational results, discusses the influence of the function's singular values on the topology of the Julia set, and examines the Hausdorff dimension as a measure of its geometric complexity. We analyze specific function families, including the exponential and cosine families, to illustrate the diverse geometric phenomena. Key open problems, such as the Eremenko-Lyubich conjecture on the unboundedness of escaping set components, are also discussed in the context of their geometric implications.
