Description

This repository contains the data and scripts required to reproduce the results of the manuscript "The Financial Toll of Climate-Induced Crop Losses" submitted to the Earth's Future journal. 

Brief description of project

This project has three main goals:

  1. Quantify the financial impact of heat- and drought-induced crop (maize, wheat, and soybeans) losses
  2. Attribute the economic damages from heat-induced crop losses to the CO2 emissions of high-income groups and the Carbon Majors companies
  3. Project and compare the future financial impacts under different climate change and socioeconomic developments (SSPs)

Repository content

  • /data directory: contains the data to reproduce the panel regression analyses and plot the figures presented in the manuscript
    • /data/models: contains the fitted regression models
    • /data/historical: contains the historical (training) data used for model fitting and the outputs from the fitted model
    • /data/ssp: contains the SSP projection outputs from the fitted model
    • /data/resources: contains the raw data files used in this study
  • /scripts directory: contains the python scripts to run the panel regression model and to plot the figures presented in the manuscript
    • /scripts/linregress/run_linregress.py: script to fit the panel regression model
    • /scripts/plotting: contains scripts to plot all figures in the manuscript

      • plot_fig4_carbmaj.py: script to plot Figure 4 (maps and time series of crop yield, production and economic impact incurred by the CO2 emissions of the Carbon Majors)
      • plot_fig5_ssp_dy_dp_maps.py: script to plot Figure 5 (maps and time series of SSP projections of crop yield and production losses)
      • plot_fig6_ssp_de_degdp_maps.py: script to plot Figure 5 (maps and time series of SSP projections of the economic impact resulting from crop losses) 
      • SI_plot_figs1_crop_yield.py: script to plot Figure S1 (maps and time series of historical FAOSTAT crop yield)
      • SI_plot_figs2_tmax_spei.py: script tp plot Figure S2 (maps and time series of historical temperature and SPEI-12 climate data)
      • SI_plot_figs3_hist_dy_dp_bars.py: script to plot Figure S3 (bar charts of the historical yield and production change, broken down by crop type)
      • SI_plot_figs4_hist_de_degdp_bars.py: script to plot Figure S4 (bar charts of the historical economic losses, broken down by crop type)
      • SI_plot_figs5_hist_gdp_pp.py: script to plot Figure S5 (time series of historical GDP and producer prices for the three crops)
    • /scripts/utils.py: script containing various utility functions
