Tribal Contributions to Indian Culture: A Special Reference to Maharashtra
Description
India’s cultural identity has been significantly shaped by its tribal communities, who constitute nearly 8.6% of the national population. Maharashtra, home to diverse tribes such as the Warli, Bhil, Gond, Katkari, Korku, and Thakar, presents a unique cultural mosaic that blends art, music, rituals, and ecological wisdom. Tribal contributions are visible in globally recognized art forms like Warli paintings, indigenous agricultural practices such as millet cultivation, vibrant folk dances, and nature-based festivals. This paper explores these contributions with special reference to Maharashtra, emphasizing their enduring impact on Indian cultural heritage. The study also highlights the challenges faced in preserving tribal traditions in the modern era, while underlining the need for documentation, policy support, and cultural promotion.
