Description
The narwhal is among the species covered by the Greenland Institute of Natural Resources’
monitoring and research programme. Narwhals in the various management areas are monitored by aerial surveys on their summering grounds and relating estimates of abundance with
information about hunting pressure and migration patterns. In addition, several studies have
highlighted important aspects of narwhal behaviour, biology and sensitivity to disturbance. In
most cases, the studies have been conducted in close collaboration with hunters, local citizens
and international partners, who have all contributed their knowledge and expertise in their respective fields.
