La metapintura y sus funciones en el Persiles de Cervantes

RESUMEN 

El artículo examina la presencia y función de la metapintura en Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda de Cervantes, entendida como la inserción de pinturas dentro de la narración y como un procedimiento que revela la dimensión artística y alegórica del mundo ficcional. A través del análisis del lienzo de Lisboa, los retratos de Auristela y la galería de Hipólita, el estudio muestra cómo Cervantes utiliza el arte pictórico para reforzar la relación entre palabra e imagen, resaltar conceptos estéticos del Barroco (como el Deus pictor, la superioridad del arte sobre la naturaleza o la función moral del retrato) y subrayar la naturaleza simbólica de los personajes y episodios. El artículo evidencia cómo la pintura, real o descrita, actúa como mecanismo narrativo, alegórico y metatextual, integrando tradición clásica, teoría artística renacentista y práctica literaria cervantina.

ABSTRACT

This article explores the presence and function of metapainting in Cervantes’ Los trabajos de Persiles y Sigismunda, understood as the inclusion of paintings within the narrative and as a device that reveals the artistic and allegorical dimensions of the fictional world. Through the analysis of the Lisbon canvas, Auristela’s portraits, and Hipólita’s gallery, the study shows how Cervantes uses pictorial art to reinforce the relationship between word and image, highlight Baroque aesthetic concepts (such as the Deus pictor, the superiority of art over nature, or the moral value of portraiture), and underscore the symbolic nature of characters and episodes. The article demonstrates how painting—real or described—functions as a narrative, allegorical, and metatextual mechanism, combining classical tradition, Renaissance art theory, and Cervantine literary practice.
