Sensitivity Analysis of Soil Moisture with Hydrus 1D in the municipality of Garanhuns, PE

Understanding the hydrological processes in soil and the sensitivity of the associated parameters is crucial for the sustainable management of water resources, especially in semi-arid regions such as the Caatinga biome. This study employs the HYDRUS-1D software to model soil moisture and perform a sensitivity analysis of hydrodynamic parameters in soils from native Caatinga and pasture areas in Garanhuns, Pernambuco, Brazil. Hydrometeorological and geotechnical data from 2017 were used to simulate soil moisture under precipitation and non-precipitation conditions. Parameters such as water retention coefficient, saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks), alpha parameter (a), and the curvature factor of the retention curve (n) were analyzed. Results indicate high sensitivity of cumulative evapotranspiration to parameter variations, highlighting a direct impact on saturation dynamics and water availability. Conversely, variables such as surface runoff and cumulative infiltration showed low sensitivity. These findings emphasize the importance of accounting for hydrodynamic parameter sensitivity when developing strategies for water conservation and management in semi-arid areas. The analysis also underscores the impacts of land use changes on the soil's water storage potential, contributing to more efficient and sustainable water resource planning in the region.
