The Imperative of Lifelong Learning for African Engineers
Description
A sturdy foundation for lifelong learning is necessary due to the rapid pace of technological innovation and the evolving needs of the engineering profession. Many engineers in Africa grapple with several challenges with regards to continuous learning, such as lack of financial support. A literature review was employed in developing this paper, leveraging databases such as Google Scholar & EBSCOhost, including articles from Engineering Journals. This study emphasised the significance of lifelong learning for engineers in sub-Saharan Africa. It further stressed the importance of problem-based learning, self-directed learning, and combining formal and informal education leveraging online courses, workshops, and professional conferences. It concluded that in addition to the already acquired skills from higher institutions of learning, continuous learning offers African engineers better opportunities to meet industrial demands. Hence, relevant stakeholders need to collaborate in fostering lifelong learning among engineers in the region.
