Fazekas I. & Nel A. 2025: Sesiidae Wing Impression in Miocene (Badenian) Dacitic Tuff from Hun- gary (Magyaregregy, Mecsek Mountains)

Authors/Creators

Description

A previously undocumented Sesiidae hind wing impression has been identified in dacitic tuff
layers of Badenian age (Middle Miocene) from the Csiga Csiga-dűlő locality, situated in the western part of
Magyaregregy, in the northern foreland of the Mecsek Mountains (Southern Hungary). The fossil was dis-
covered on June 14, 1996, on the surface of a bedding plane and subsequently deposited in the Natural
History Collection of Komló. Despite its potential paleontological relevance, the specimen remained un-
published and largely forgotten for nearly three decades. This contribution presents the first formal docu-
mentation of the find, including its geological context and a drawing of the wing impression prepared by
the original collector. The occurrence of insect fossils in volcaniclastic deposits of the Pannonian Basin is
rare, and this specimen adds valuable data to the sparse Miocene insect record of the region. Only two un-
described Sesiidae were previously known, a compression from the late Oligocene of France and an inclu-
sion in amber of uncertain origin. The new fossil belongs to the tribe Paraglosseciini, now now-a-day absent in
Western Palaearctic but present in Eastern Palaearctic, Indo Indo-Malayan, and Australasian regions.
