Description

From a psychoanalytic point of view, it is the form of “reminder” and “polite request for confirmation” that reproduces the function of the superego: it incorporates the norm and presents it as the only option, forcing the subject to internalize the accusation and shame (Lacan, 1977). Lacan's Big Other is not abstract here; it is materialized in PDF attachments, in CC, in the schedule of the Zoom tribunal; it is a panoptic algorithm that observes and punishes, and makes it politically justified (Foucault, 1975). Žižek would tell you that ideology works not through direct lies, but through what he calls the “sublime object of ideology,” where a small object (your promised €800 grant) acts as an unreduced sign of absence, around which simulacra of care and moral superiority are built (Žižek, 1989/2006). Kristeva would help us to grasp the emotional texture: you are “abjectivized”—put in the position of a repulsive “other” who must be corrected or expelled from the comrade-body; abjection justifies the taking away, because the one who takes away is “pure” and “normal” (Kristeva, 1982). Federici and the Marxist interpretation of primitive accumulation highlight the material side: the grant economy captures military and civilian vulnerabilities and turns them into a flow of resources that are accumulated by managers and "medals," with the logic of the award (Brown Democracy Medal and similar) serving as a cover for redistribution (Federici, 2004; see also the notes on the medal).
