The Vibe–Structure Scale (VSS): A Framework for Developer Problem-Solving Modes in the LLM Era
Description
Modern software organizations still evaluate developers primarily by static knowledge checks and prior familiarity with specific stacks. This ‘knows X / doesn’t know X’ model systematically underrates two realities: (1) developers vary widely in their problem-solving modes—especially under uncertainty—and (2) AI coding tools amplify exploratory workflows without replacing structural reasoning.
This white paper introduces the Vibe–Structure Scale (VSS), a seven-level framework that describes how developers operate before and during creation, particularly in unfamiliar or evolving technical environments. The VSS does not measure seniority or competence directly; rather, it captures the mode of thinking—from instruction-driven execution to fully internalized structural design.
