Moulding the Imaginary

Description

Influence is not new. Humans have always looked to leaders, orators, storytellers, and charismatic figures for direction, inspiration, and meaning. The impulse to follow is ancient, rooted deep within our evolutionary psychology. We are social creatures, wired to seek connection and cues from those around us. For millennia, influence required physical proximity or access to a shared cultural medium—story, myth, reputation.

Today, influence can scale infinitely, unbounded by geography or community. A teenager in Jakarta can shape the fashion choices of millions across continents. A fitness coach in Los Angeles can become a surrogate mentor to a global audience. A conspiracy theorist in a basement can trigger widespread distrust, panic, or radicalization.

Platforms did not invent influence, but they optimized it. They made it measurable, traceable, monetizing and addictive. The architecture of the modern internet rewards visibility — not wisdom; virility — not thoughtfulness; emotional impact — not complexity. The influencers who rise to the top are not necessarily the most knowledgeable or responsible but the most engaging.
