Recommendations to implement wild boar carcass detection and dating in different environments

The prompt and efficient detection and disposal of wild boar carcasses is crucial in minimising the transmission of African Swine Fever (ASF). Additionally, accurately and quickly determining the post-mortem interval (PMI) of carcasses provides valuable information on the timing of ASF introduction, or on confirming disease elimination in the area. ENETWILD consortium already reviewed methods for locating and dating wild boar carcasses in various scenarios. However, these activities are not generally implemented systematically (due to the absence of protocols or detailed guidance), and information on field surveys is often neither reported nor made available to the public. The aim of this report is to highlight the key factors to consider when planning wild boar carcass search and dating methods in different scenarios. Our goal is to provide general guidance to facilitate the harmonised collection of the minimum necessary data during field activities related to carcass search and dating.
