Leveraging Technology in Religious Studies Education to Foster Peaceful Inter-Religious Relations in Nigeria in the 21st Century
Description
Integration of technology in Religious Studies education offers transformative potential for enhancing pedagogy, fostering inter-religious understanding, and promoting peaceful coexistence in diverse societies. This chapter examines how multimedia tools, e-learning platforms, virtual reality, and digital forums can expand learning opportunities, deepen student engagement, and bridge divides between faith communities in Nigeria. Drawing on literature and practical examples, the chapter explores the conceptual underpinnings of learning opportunities, the role of technology in modern education, and the importance of Religious Studies in cultivating tolerance. Specific applications—ranging from mobile learning apps and online courses to virtual exchange programs—are presented as strategies for promoting dialogue, empathy, and mutual respect among students of different religious backgrounds. The study also addresses challenges such as the digital divide, inadequate infrastructure, and resistance to change, alongside prospects for innovation, flexibility, and improved instructional quality. It concludes with recommendations for curriculum review, teacher training, and collaboration between government and religious bodies to enhance technology adoption. By harnessing digital tools thoughtfully, Religious Studies educators can contribute to peaceful inter-religious relations and equip learners with the intercultural competencies needed in Nigeria in the 21st century.
