Geological Database for West Macedonia - PilotSTRATEGY
Authors/Creators
Description
PilotSTRATEGY (Grant Agreement No. 101022664) is a Horizon 2020 project under the topic LC-SC3-NZE-6-2020 – Geological Storage Pilots, aiming to advance the understanding of deep saline aquifers (DSAs) for geological CO₂ storage in five European regions: the Paris Basin (France), Lusitanian Basin (Portugal), Ebro Basin (Spain), West Macedonia (Greece), and Upper Silesia (Poland). The project’s main goal is to enhance confidence and maturity in DSA characterization through integrated geoscientific studies, new data acquisition, reprocessing of legacy datasets, and modelling, thereby enabling future pilot implementation and supporting Europe’s carbon neutrality objectives.
Deliverable D2.12, led by CERTH under WP2 – Geo-characterisation, compiles and interprets geological, geophysical, geochemical, and structural data from the West Macedonia Basin, one of the project’s two secondary sites. The dataset integrates results from seismic reprocessing, field mapping, borehole information, and laboratory analyses (XRD, SEM, optical microscopy), organized within a GIS-based framework to produce updated geological maps and cross-sections. These outputs delineate the stratigraphy and structural framework of the Pentalofos and Eptachori formations, assess their suitability for CO₂ storage, and provide a regional geological foundation for subsequent modelling and site evaluation activities.
