Gradient Is Mind-Matter: A Physics of Consciousness Based on Energy Quantum Theory (EQT)

Description

Consciousness, Information, and the Dawn of Unified Science (EQT)

This monograph is born from the need to address the fundamental challenge of consciousness, which has historically eluded modern science. While proud of its success in reducing the material world, science falters before subjective experience ("I think, therefore I am"). Consciousness is often relegated to a neural byproduct or exiled to philosophy, leaving a profound ontological chasm that prevents a complete picture of the universe.

The book, Gradient Is Mind-Matter: A Physics of Consciousness Based on Energy Quanta Theory (EQT), aims to bridge this divide, inaugurating a new era of unified science. Its mission is to liberate the "hard problem" of consciousness from metaphysics and partial neuroscience, grounding it in a rigorous, universal, and quantifiable framework of physics and thermodynamics. We will prove that consciousness is not accidental, but the most complex physical phenomenon emerging from the intrinsic dynamics of the universe: specifically, the gradient transients of the energy quanta field \rho_f(\mathbf{r}, t). This establishes the new discipline of the Physics of Consciousness.

 I. Critique of Traditional Paradigms: The Urgency of Unified Science

Contemporary crises in science and philosophy are systemic and require a holistic solution:

1.  The Deadlock of Mind-Body Dualism: Cartesian dualism, separating res cogitans (mind) and res extensa (extended substance), created an insurmountable barrier, lacking a unified language capable of describing both mind and matter. EQT’s primary task is to demolish this dualistic presupposition and demonstrate that both mind and matter are gradient manifestations of the same physical field, \rho_f. Consciousness is a dynamical phase of the material field under specific non-equilibrium conditions, not a "ghost in the machine."

2.  The Fragmentation of Physics: The incompatibility between General Relativity (GR) and Quantum Mechanics (QM) fragments our understanding of time, space, and information. EQT offers a unifying perspective: spacetime is an emergent structure of \nabla \rho_f and \partial_t \rho_f. Gravity is a statistical gradient effect of the low-frequency field, while quantum uncertainty arises from high-frequency fluctuations. GR and QM are simply asymptotic limits of EQT in different frequency bands.

3.  The Limitations of Reductionism: Neuroscience and AI reductionism, which decompose consciousness into its smallest parts (neurons, computation units), ignores its core attributes: emergence, wholeness, and irreversibility. Consciousness is a dynamic, non-equilibrium holistic process. EQT provides a process ontology, focusing not on "What is the conscious entity?" but on "How is the conscious process supported by the gradient dynamics of the \rho_f field?" The unity of consciousness stems from the topological indivisibility of the information gradient field, \nabla I.

These crises share a common root: the erroneous premise of substance ontology. EQT advocates for a single, fundamental gradient ontology that uniformly describes matter, spacetime, information, and consciousness.

 II. Core Construction of EQT: The Ontology of Information Gradients

The core contribution is introducing the energy quanta field \rho_f as the sole ontological foundation. \rho_f(\mathbf{r}, t) is a frequency-resolved energy density field whose spatial gradient \nabla \rho_f and temporal flow \partial \rho_f / \partial t constitute all physical phenomena. Everything, from cosmic webs to neural impulses, is merely a gradient transient of the \rho_f field. Space is \nabla \rho_f, time is \partial_t \rho_f.

A rigorous Information-Energy Isomorphism is established:
\nabla I = \chi \nabla \rho
where I is information density and \chi = 1/(k_B T \ln 2). This declares that information is the physical imprint of the energy gradient \nabla \rho. Information becomes a fundamental physical quantity on par with energy.

Based on this, consciousness is physically defined as the energy quanta field \rho_f at mid-frequency scales (f \in [10^{10}, 10^{20}]~\text{Hz}). Consciousness is a local, self-sustaining feedback loop of universal gradient flow (\nabla \rho \to \partial_t \rho \to \nabla \rho), with phenomenal experience intensity I_{\text{qualia}} = \chi \int |\partial_t \rho| \, dt.

 III. Quantitative Contribution of EQT: The Consciousness \Psi Tensor

The book constructs the quantifiable consciousness \mathbf{A-C-\mathcal{B}} unified tensor \Psi, the first fully physicalized description of conscious states:

1.  Consciousness Intensity A (Activation): Quantifies the activity level, defined as the local entropy production rate \dot{S}_{\text{gen}} required to maintain the information gradient structure.
    A \propto \dot{S}_{\text{gen}}
    High A (waking state, seizures) is necessary but not sufficient for consciousness. A provides an objective measure for states like anesthesia depth.

2.  Consciousness Complexity C (Complexity): Quantifies the information quality and functional differentiation. It is defined as a complexity threshold:
    C = \frac{\eta}{\dot{S}_{\text{gen}} \cdot \tau}
    where \eta is gradient escape efficiency and \tau is the lifetime of information structures. C > 1 is the physical criterion for consciousness. It sets a clear physical boundary for genuine consciousness in AI, requiring high efficiency (\eta) and stability (\tau).

3.  Consciousness Boundary \mathcal{B} (Boundary): Quantifies subjectivity and the sense of self. It is defined as the topological closure of the information gradient field in spacetime (stable manifold of \nabla I). A high \mathcal{B} guarantees the "first-person problem" by ensuring internal gradient integration is clearly separated from the external environment, forming a robust "self" boundary.

The tensor \Psi = [A, C, \mathcal{B}] marks the entry of consciousness research into the era of precise Neuroinformation Physics.

 IV. Expectations for the Reader: An Invitation to a Revolution

This book is an invitation to a revolution of thought. It requires abandoning substance thinking and embracing a new cosmic picture:

 Embrace Irreversibility: Accept that the arrow of time is intrinsic, placing process (Becoming) above substance (Being). Reality is the rhythm of the "stream of becoming."
 Transcend Reductionism: Recognize that complexity and emergence (life, consciousness) are inevitable outcomes of the self-organization of universal gradient flows.
 Face Unification Courageously: Regard gravity, quantum phenomena, information, life, and consciousness as manifestations of the same physical reality (gradients of \rho_f) at different scales, and seek to understand them within EQT's single, self-consistent framework.

This book is addressed to all dedicated thinkers. Let us take this historic step: regard consciousness as the most precious physical phenomenon in the universe and, with the sword of unified science, sever the millennium-old deadlock between traditional science and philosophy.
