How Is AI Transforming Teachers' Roles in Low- and Middle-Income Countries?

This learning brief is the third in a series of three on the impact of AI on teachers' roles. It maps where AI use in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) is beginning to, or has the potential to, fundamentally change and 'transform' teachers' roles (Horizon 3). The use cases chosen for the 'transform' horizon fundamentally shift teachers' practice and/or how they allocate their time. This horizon envisions a future where AI fundamentally transforms the educational landscape. Companion briefs focus on the extent to which AI can 'upgrade' (Horizon 1) and 'disrupt' (Horizon 2) teachers' roles. By presenting AI integration in education along these horizons, we hope to make system shifts feel more navigable for educators. The brief covers three use cases regarding how AI is 'transforming' teachers' roles: AI-led learning environments; teacher–AI complementarity and hybrid intelligence; and a multi-intelligence learning ecology. For each use case, the brief describes the contextual challenges that teachers experience, the potential for AI to address these challenges, examples or evidence, and lastly, any risks or concerns that may arise from such use.
