Description

ABSTRACT

This study investigates how scarcity-based messaging influences impulse purchasing decisions in online retail environments and proposes optimized strategies that balance commercial objectives with ethical consumer protection. Through controlled experiments utilizing simulated e-commerce interfaces with 312 participants, we examined varied scarcity intensity levels and messaging formats. Eye-tracking technology and purchase simulation protocols revealed that moderate scarcity cues generated a 35% conversion increase compared to control conditions, while high-intensity tactics yielded 40% increases but triggered 25% higher post-purchase regret. Optimized phrasing incorporating restocking transparency sustained engagement without inducing decision fatigue. Findings demonstrate that personalized, dynamic scarcity messaging—calibrated to individual consumer susceptibility profiles—can enhance sales performance while mitigating exploitative practices. Implications suggest e-commerce platforms should implement A/B testing frameworks with ethical guardrails, prioritizing long-term customer relationships over short-term conversion spikes. This research contributes to sustainable digital marketing practices by identifying threshold effects where scarcity tactics transition from persuasive to manipulative.
