Understanding Induced Delusional Disorder Through Case Studies

Abstract

This study explores Induced Delusional Disorder, also known as Shared Psychotic Disorder, which is a rare mental condition where two or more people share the same false belief. Usually, one person called the primary case first develops the delusion, and the others called secondary cases come to believe it too because of their close and dependent relationship. The study examines several documented cases, including Folie à trois, and Folie à famille. The findings indicate that the primary case may be either a child or an adult, while the secondary cases are often family members like parents, spouses, or children. The most effective treatment is separating the primary case from the others, administering antipsychotic medication, and offering psychological support. Results also suggest that both genetic and environmental factors, together with strong emotional bonds, play important roles in the development and persistence of shared delusions.
