banana fiber as a potential packaging material-eco friendly, bio-degradable

Description

Botential of Banana Fiber as a Sustainable Packaging Materiral

Description ;

This paper explores the potential of banana fiber, a natural ligno-cellulosic material derived from the pseudostem of the banana plant, as an eco-friendly alternative to conventional packaging materials. With the growing global concern over plastic waste and the need for sustainable packaging options, banana fiber offers excellent mechanical strength, biodegradability, and wide availability in banana-growing regions such as Andhra Pradesh, India.

The study outlines the fiber extraction process, pulping techniques, and paper sheet formation methods suitable for small- to medium-scale enterprises. It also discusses the physical properties, environmental benefits, and economic viability of banana fiber packaging. The results indicate that banana fiber-based packaging materials are not only biodegradable and compostable but also suitable for dry produce and agricultural packaging.

This work highlights banana fiber as a sustainable and commercially viable raw material that can support circular economy initiatives, rural employment, and agro-waste utilization in India and other tropical regions.
