A1 CEFR Arabic Vocabulary Profile

This is a preliminary A1 CEFR Arabic Vocabulary Profile that comes out of the development and validation of the A1 Arabic Vocabulary Profile (AVP), the first empirically based lexical inventory aligned with the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) for Arabic as a second or foreign language. The AVP aims to provide a pedagogically sound and scientifically validated foundation for curriculum design, assessment, and instructional practice in adult Arabic language education. The A1 AVP comprises over 400 lexical items, including nouns, verbs, adjectives, particles, and expressions, selected through corpus analysis, frequency data, and cross-dialectal validation. To ensure reliability, seventy-one Arabic language instructors from eighteen countries participated in a two-round validation process, assessing lexical appropriateness, communicative relevance, and alignment with A1 CEFR descriptors. Quantitative analyses and agreement thresholds of 65–68% confirmed strong consensus among validators. Qualitative feedback further refined the list to reflect both Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) and widely used dialectal variants. The resulting A1 AVP constitutes a draft frequency-based lexical tool that establishes a benchmark for early-stage Arabic proficiency, offering a replicable model for future CEFR-aligned levels (A2–C2) and a vital resource for teachers, curriculum developers, and assessment specialists in Teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language (TAFL).
