Description

This study analyzes water losses in urban supply systems across Mato Grosso do Sul (MS), aiming to identify how and to what extent operational inefficiency in water distribution varies among municipalities. Research was based on performance indicators from International Water Association (IWA), focusing on Infrastructure Leakage Index (ILI). Objective was to evaluate performance of municipal water services regarding physical and commercial losses. Methodological approach followed a theoretical-deductive design, using secondary data provided by municipal operators and public databases, covering all municipalities in Mato Grosso do Sul and selecting as a sample those with complete data for reference years. Procedures included data collection and comparative analysis through selected indicators. Results revealed notable disparities: municipalities such as Corumbá and Cassilândia showed lowest efficiency levels, while Campo Grande recorded highest absolute water losses due to population density and operational scale. Findings indicate that systematic adoption of IWA indicators represents an effective tool for monitoring and transparency in water supply management, emphasizing need for investment in infrastructure, preventive maintenance, and awareness programs promoting hydric sustainability. In practical terms, results provide technical and strategic support for improving public policies and decision-making aimed at sustainable water management, aligned with Sustainable Development Goals (SDG 6 and SDG 9).
