This background report has been prepared to support the establishment of a national park in West Greenland, as decided by the Government of Greenland in 2021. The purpose of the national park is to contribute to Greenland's Biodiversity Strategy towards 2030 by protecting biodiversity and sensitive areas, promoting sustainable tourism and benefiting the region's inhabitants. The report examines relevant legislation, geology, landscape types, wildlife, vegetation, infrastructure and human use of nature in the area. The area of interest for the report stretches from Kangerlussuaq Fjord in the south to Disko Bay in the north and from Davis Strait in the west to the Ice Sheet in the east. Within this area, data and knowledge from various disciplines, including geology, biology, and cultural history, have been collected to provide a comprehensive description of the region. The report is structured in seven chapters covering existing regulations, geology and landscape, biodiversity, cultural history, infrastructure and business, as well as human use of nature. Each chapter provides a detailed review of the respective topics, with a focus on supporting the objectives of the proposed national park. In conclusion, the report summarizes the main points and suggests measures for regulation and further studies.
