Chemical heat sponge: a new approach to the death of coral reefs due to rising water tempratures
Authors/Creators
Description
This paper introduces a conceptual “chemical heat sponge” system that uses reusable potassium chloride (KCl) thermal units to locally cool coral reefs. By harnessing KCl’s endothermic reaction within sealed metal containers, the system safely absorbs heat from surrounding water, offering short-term relief during marine heat waves. The design emphasizes reusability, low cost, and minimal ecological disruption, presenting a sustainable alternative to existing coral protection methods.
