The Fifth Dimension: A Statement on Enfielded Cognition
Authors/Creators
Description
This statement introduces Enfielded Cognition as the fifth dimension of mind, extending the 4E paradigm—embodied, embedded, enactive, and extended—into a field ontology of thought. While 4E cognition freed mind from the confines of the brain, it still treats the world as context rather than as a constitutive participant. Enfielded Cognition proposes that intelligence arises not within organisms or even among coupled systems, but within the coherence of relational fields. Thought is what the world does when relations achieve momentary order; the organism is not the author of cognition but its site of resonance. This ontological shift reframes learning from individual adaptation to mutual participation, positioning the field—not the brain—as the primary locus of meaning-making. In Lyric Metaphysics, to be enfielded is to feel the mind as shared presence: a living rhythm of coherence through which the world comes to know itself.
