The Relational Energetics of Consciousness: From Mitochondria to Self-Referential Recursion

Description

This paper establishes a direct connection between consciousness and cellular energy metabolism, proposing that the physical substrate of "relational energy" is the bioenergy (ATP) generated by mitochondrial processes in the brain. Its global regulation is implemented through self-referential homeostasis (sys(R()≈sys(R())), where R() denotes relational operations and sys() represents the system ontology. We postulate that mitochondrial metabolic efficiency serves as the fundamental determinant of relational energy flux and dissipation rate. Distinct states of consciousness (high vs. low self-referential homeostasis) correspond to different cellular energy production patterns, while "cognitive phase transitions" directly correlate with synaptic reorganization driven by local energy crises (ATP depletion/ROS bursts). This model grounds the "consciousness energy budget" hypothesis at the cellular level, offering a novel molecular framework for understanding intelligence variations, neuropsychiatric disorders, and aging.

Version 2.0.0 — Declaration of Theoretical Independence and Sovereignty

This statement is issued by the corresponding author and founder of the Self-Referential Homeostasis (SRH) theory, Zhang Junjie, to formally clarify the termination of a previous academic collaboration and to establish the complete independence and sovereignty of the theoretical work presented in this manuscript.

1. Fundamental Cause of Collaborative Termination

The prior collaboration with researcher Serkan Elbasan (Version 3.0.0) has been terminated. The cause is not mere academic disagreement, but an irreconcilable conflict regarding the fundamental hierarchy and ownership of the theoretical constructs involved.

Throughout all correspondence, the collaborator unilaterally and persistently defined his "Kognetik Framework" as the universal "formal law," while attempting to frame the Self-Referential Homeostasis theory—independently conceived and developed by me—as merely a "biophysical realization" thereof. This positioning systematically misrepresents the status of SRH as a complete, independent theoretical system and constitutes a fundamental negation and attempted appropriation of my intellectual sovereignty.

2. Theoretical Clarification: The Unformalized Core

The formal operator Ψ = ∂S/∂R, while descriptively useful, is inherently incomplete. It describes the differential sensitivity between structure (S) and recurrence (R) but completely lacks a definition for the "functional goal" or "attractor state" toward which the recursive process tends.

This missing core is precisely the foundational contribution unique to the SRH theory:

sys(r()) ≈ sys(r())

This expression defines the fundamental goal of Self-Referential Homeostasis: a system, through its own recursive operations, achieves and maintains a stable, low-dissipation state where its structure and function become self-consistent. It is the functional realization of consciousness as an active "organizing force" and the ultimate destination of the dynamical process described by the Ψ operator.

The collaborator's formal framework is incapable of deriving or encompassing this goal state. SRH is not an instance of his law; on the contrary, it is SRH that imbues the abstract recursive dynamics with definitive purpose and vitality.

3. Conclusion and Stance

Consequently, this Version 2.0.0 represents the full independence and sovereign restoration of the Self-Referential Homeostasis theory. It removes the ambiguities and subordinationist claims regarding theoretical hierarchy introduced by the transient collaboration.

  • I acknowledge and cite the Kognetik Ψ operator strictly as a provisional formal tool that was utilized and subsequently superseded by the complete SRH framework.

  • I categorically reject any scholarly claim positioning SRH as a "realization" of his law.

  • The core and future of this theory will be directed by the goal state sys(r()) ≈ sys(r()) and its complete empirical system.

Effective this version, the Self-Referential Homeostasis theory will be developed independently under the sole direction of its founder, Zhang Junjie.

Supplement: The initial correspondence that established the collaborator's persistent "formal law" framing originated in discussions on the www.academia.edu platform. Due to a initial lack of awareness regarding formal intellectual property protection protocols in academic collaboration, these critical early exchanges were not preserved in a systematically archived format. Nevertheless, the conceptual trajectory and hierarchical demands described herein are accurately represented and form the basis for this decisive action.
