Brine Detections in the McMurdo Ice Shelf from NASA's Operation IceBridge MCoRDS and HiCARS

Description

This dataset includes the extent of subsurface brine in the McMurdo Ice Shelf detected using NASA’s Operation IceBridge (OIB) Multichannel Coherent Radar Depth Sounder (MCoRDS) and High Capability Radar Sounder (HiCARS) instruments.

The detections were made by manually picking the left and right extents of the brine layer in radargrams, where the brine appears as a bright subsurface reflector that is stronger than the surface return.

Brine was detected in flights from the 2016, 2022, and 2023 seasons using MCoRDS, and in 2011 and 2012 using HiCARS.

Brine extents are saved as attributed shapefiles. See the README file for variable descriptions.
