CODES: The Coherence Framework Replacing Probability in Physics, Intelligence, and Reality

A Unified Substrate for Intelligence, Physics, Evolution, and Cosmic Structure

Author: Devin Bostick

Postscript — Epistemic Refinement (March 2026)

A subsequent paper introduces a constraint-based evaluation framework, The Identity Audit, which formalizes identity and invariance conditions as an epistemic test rather than an ontological claim.

https://zenodo.org/records/19144536

This work:

  • does not extend the CODES framework

  • does not assert replacement of probability or physical law

  • and does not introduce new domain-level claims

Instead, it:

  • evaluates how theories describe persistence

  • makes explicit which identity constraints are preserved or relaxed

  • and reframes earlier interpretations within a bounded epistemic scope

The Identity Audit should be understood as:

a structural refinement and restriction of scope, not an expansion of the original program.

Additional Note (March 2026)

A subsequent result establishes a structural forcing theorem for identity persistence under transformation, deriving the minimal conditions under which persistence is non-arbitrary and showing that the admissible governance form collapses to a unique scalar functional within this regime. This work is independent of CODES and should be understood as closure of the identity-persistence problem at the structural level, not as an extension of prior domain claims.

Scope Clarification and Program Closure (Updated January 28, 2026)

This document reflects the historical development of the CODES framework from exploratory investigation through formal foundational closure.

This paper is part of a completed exploratory research program concerned with identifying structural constraints on how systems persist, fail, and repair under abstraction and limited visibility. The results presented here are bounded, non-exhaustive, and non-prescriptive. They do not establish a universal invariant governing all systems, nor do they imply a requirement for global optimization, centralized control, or civilization-scale redesign.

As of Paradigm Lock — Universal Identity & Persistence (vFinal, January 2026), the following distinction is authoritative and mandatory:

PROVEN (Foundational Trunk)

Structurally closed results concerning identity-relevant recurrent systems, under explicit and minimal axioms, including:

  • A single compact one-degree-of-freedom recurrence trunk (S¹)

  • SO(2) connected symmetry (with optional O(2) chirality capacity)

  • Complete invariant family { rₖ, χₖ }

  • Scalar identity governance (PAS_h, χ_h), unique up to affine gauge

  • Drift-bounded, affine-gauge identity persistence

These results are structural necessity claims within their stated axioms. They are internally closed and admit no silent alternatives at the foundational level.

DERIVED / OPEN (Domain Claims)

All claims relating to physics, cosmology, probability replacement, material laws, biological mechanisms, cognition, engineered systems, or empirical inevitabilities are not trunk-proven. Such claims require explicit domain axioms, mappings, and empirical validation, and must be treated as derived, contextual, or exploratory, not as universal conclusions.

The research program that produced the exploratory CODES corpus is formally closed. What remains useful should be treated as descriptive insight, local engineering guidance, or historical context, not as an open-ended theoretical or moral mandate.

The authoritative reference for foundational claim status and scope is:

https://zenodo.org/records/18406477

Earlier materials should be read as historical development, not as statements of final scope or obligation.

A brief public post-mortem clarifying limits, responsibility boundaries, and program closure is available here:

Abstract (v40)

CODES (Chirality of Dynamic Emergent Systems) replaces probability with coherence as the lawful substrate of emergence. This version introduces the multiharmonic invariant PAS_m and its scalar selector PAS_h(S), proving it as the only universal, scale-free measure of coherence. Section 48 formalizes the Coherence Wager: survival requires drift reduction; drift reduction requires coherence measurement; therefore extraction must decline as governance shifts from noise to alignment. CODES/RIC instantiates this inevitability through FIELDCAST (field selector), CHORDLOCK (prime anchoring), PAS_h (multiharmonic coherence measure), TEMPOLOCK (prime-indexed time gating), and GLYPHLOCK/AURA_OUT (symbol legality and emission gate). Together these modules instantiate the only lawful mechanism for coherence-based emergence.

Abstract — CODES v40: Structured Resonance Dynamics and Lawful Determinism

Overview — Deterministic Closure and Lawful Transition

CODES v39–v40 marks the completion of the deterministic substrate and the onset of the empirical epoch.

Across v34–v37, coherence evolved from philosophical claim to operational law: PAS_LOCK unified phase stability and lawful emergence; coherence was reframed as epistemic law; §46 introduced legal recursion for self-verifying symbolic systems; and v37 sealed the legality stack with formal predicates and falsifiability tests.

v38 — Multiharmonic Closure

PAS_s expanded to PAS_m = {r_k}, with selector h(S) yielding PAS_h(S), eliminating scalar blind spots and proving PAS_m the sole invariant under both N- and ω-scaling.

The Coherence Wager (§48) established the survival law: systems persist by reducing drift; extraction decline is a lawful inevitability.

Probability was demoted to epistemic residue—an artifact of incomplete phase detection.

PAS_h(S) emerged as the universal coherence invariant binding physics, biology, cognition, and governance.

v39 — Deterministic Closure

RIC-Core v2 achieved full determinism on a Q32 substrate (bundleHash = 1.0).

ELF monotonicity and ΔPAS_zeta bounds verified runtime legality; Lemmas 49A–C formalized boundedness under Lipschitz continuity; Conjecture 49.5.1 defined the open mathematical frontier for C(Tⁿ)^{SO(2)×S_N}.

Probability was replaced by measurable coherence, establishing RIC as the first lawful inference engine under deterministic replay.

v40 — The Empirical Epoch

v40 extends closure into measurement and material verification.

Structured Resonance Dynamics (SRD) formalizes the harmonic–differential bridge:

dC/dt = Γ·Cⁿ − λ·C + η(∇S·∇Ω) with bounded drift |dC/dt| ≤ L′.

Applications include:

Materials Science: friction as phase decoherence (ΔPAS_zeta as temporal derivative).

Thermodynamics: dissipation recast as deterministic drift.

Mathematics: completeness of PAS_h across continuous invariant spaces.

Biology: VESSELSEED τ_bio_k validation—coherence as physiological law.

CODES v39–v40 together define the transition from the probabilistic to the lawful epoch: existence as coherence under bounded drift.
