Intersentient States: A Foundational Note

Description

Intersentient States introduces a new concept in artistic research: the idea that artworks, materials, and perceivers can momentarily share a field of awareness. Developed through years of work in both science and ceramics, the note proposes that certain artefacts act not as static results but as participants in perception - forms that 'seem' to listen, remember, and respond. Drawing on ideas of material agency and relational aesthetics, it situates this phenomenon within a wider tradition of artists and thinkers concerned with how matter shapes perception and presence. The text also reflects on the creative process itself as a dialogue between matter, maker, and mind. Published as an open-access foundational note, it establishes authorship and conceptual priority for the term Intersentient States, with further visual material to follow.

Abstract (English)

Intersentient States proposes that artworks, materials, and viewers can momentarily share awareness. Drawing on experience in science and ceramics, David Barrow describes how certain forms participate in perception rather than represent it—bridging matter, maker, and mind. This open-access note establishes authorship and context for the emerging concept of intersentience.
