Description

Visually impaired individuals face significant challenges in performing daily activities, particularly due to their reliance on visual stimuli. To assist with mobility, individuals often rely on auxiliary equipment such as white canes. However, traditional canes provide only limited environmental information, are insufficient in detecting objects above waist level, and also occupy the user's hands, thereby restricting their ability to use them freely. To address these challenges, an AI-assisted smart glasses system enhanced with security features has been developed, aiming to increase environmental awareness and support more independent movement for visually impaired individuals. The developed system consists of camera modules, a battery pack, a charging unit, a custom-designed 3D-printed frame, and a mobile application. Using computer vision-based artificial intelligence algorithms, the glasses are capable of detecting objects and distances and providing users with auditory alerts for navigation assistance. Additionally, the device offers features such as navigation support, location sharing, and a voice assistant to guide users in their daily activities. Through the integrated mobile application, secure sharing of the user's location and environmental information is enabled. Beyond simple data protection, the system architecture incorporates an AI-based threat detection mechanism to safeguard against unauthorized access. Security considerations have been implemented not only in the mobile communication infrastructure but also within the software processes of the device. In conclusion, this study presents a user-centered assistive device designed to enhance the mobility and independence of visually impaired individuals, supported by AI-based detection systems and secure data sharing in a technologically integrated framework.
