Atmospheric simulations from "Uncertainties in Southern Ocean sea surface conditions and their impact on Antarctic climate over 1958–1978"

This dataset contains annual, globally gridded output from the Community Atmospheric Model version 4 (CAM4) forced with two different sea surface condition (SSC) datasets – ERA5 and ANT-REC – over the period 1958–2000.

The simulations were performed to investigate the sensitivity of the Antarctic surface climate to uncertainties in Southern Ocean SSCs during the pre-satellite period (i.e., 1958–1978).

Two 10-member ensembles are provided:

• ERA5-forced CAM ensemble

• ANT-REC-forced CAM ensemble

Each ensemble member differs only by small perturbations in the atmospheric initial conditions (micro-perturbation method; Kay et al., 2015).

All files are annual means and are provided on a 1.9° × 2.5° latitude–longitude grid consistent with the CAM4 f19 configuration.

File structure

Each file follows the naming convention: <exp>.<member>.1958-2000.nc . Example: ERA5-forced.001.1958-2000.nc.

Each file contains the following variables:

• PRECT – Total precipitation (m s-1)

• PSL – Sea-level pressure (Pa)

• TREFHT – Near-surface (2 m) air temperature (K)

• U850 – Zonal wind at 850 hPa (m s-1)

• V850 – Meridional wind at 850 hPa (m s-1)

• Z500 – Geopotential height at 500 hPa (m)

• Q200-900 – Vertically integrated water vapor between 200–900 hPa (kg m-2)

All variables are provided as annual means and cover the global domain.
