Mathematical problem-solving competence is one of the five core components of mathematical competency. The topic Decimals and Decimal Operations constitutes a central content area within the Numbers and Operations strand of the Grade 5 Mathematics curriculum. This paper proposes several teaching approaches to decimals and decimal operations oriented toward developing students’ mathematical problem-solving competence in Grade 5.
