Dataset for: Innovative approach for tracking microplastics in zebrafish digestive system using micro-Computed Tomography

Description

This dataset contains X-ray micro-computed tomography (microCT) data used for non-destructive 3D imaging of biofilm-covered polyethene microplastics (PE MPs) in zebrafish. The method enables visualisation of ingestion, transport, and elimination of microplastics within the digestive system, providing detailed spatial insight into their movement and retention.

Zebrafish were exposed to PE MPs under two experimental conditions. During continuous exposure, fish were fed three concentrations of microplastics (10 mg/L, 1 mg/L, and 0.1 mg/L) and scanned at specific time points to observe accumulation and clearance patterns. In the short-term exposure, fish were fed a single concentration (1 mg/L) for 10 minutes, then maintained in clean water before scanning.

Structure:

  • MicroCT_Continuous Exposure: Includes data from continuous feeding experiments
  • MicroCT_Short Term Exposure: Includes data from short term feeding experiments

Each dataset includes RAW image files and corresponding XML metadata describing acquisition parameters. This dataset supports the article “Innovative approach for tracking microplastics in zebrafish digestive system using micro-Computed Tomography”. It demonstrates microCT as a powerful non-destructive technique for studying microplastic behaviour in biological systems.
