How to create maps with the new Map Viewer of ArcGIS Online

This paper presents a practical manual for producing geolinguistic maps using the new Map Viewer in ArcGIS Online, a web-based GIS platform provided by Esri. Officially released in April 2021, the new Map Viewer replaced the previous version, Map Viewer Classic. Classic has been widely used in geolinguistic research for many years because it offers flexible mapping capabilities, even in its free version. However, it is scheduled to be retired in early 2026. The interface of the new Map Viewer differs significantly from Classic. This paper aims to provide a practical guide for researchers in adapting to the updated environment and efficiently producing geolinguistic visualizations using ArcGIS Online.

The manual outlines essential procedures tailored to geolinguistic research, including data preparation, CSV formatting, layer uploading, map styling, symbol customization, and layer sharing. Emphasizing the importance of linguistic classification in map design, the manual provides step-by-step guidance for incorporating external symbols, adjusting legend order, and refining visual representation to reflect linguistic relationships. Additionally, it discusses the limitations of the public account (the free version) and the advantages of the Personal Use license, which enables hosted feature layers, collaborative editing, and advanced sharing options.
