Description

This database aims to provide comprehensive methodological information on how the 27 Member States and 2 associated countries (Norway and Iceland) quantified and reported food waste to Eurostat for the reference year 2022, in line with the requirements of the EU Waste Framework Directive (Directive 2008/98/EC) and the associated Commission Delegated Decision (EU) 2019/1597. It compiles and systematises country-level metadata describing the approaches used for food waste estimation across the different stages of the food supply chain. Specifically, the database documents the sampling strategies adopted, the scaling-up methodologies applied to extrapolate sample data to national totals, and the extent to which voluntary information were integrated into national reporting.

Data collection was based on  a multi-step process, based on the combination of different sources, including the Eurostat Quality Reports submitted by Member States, semi-structured interviews, a Webropol survey, and a validation round. The dialogue for data collection, interpretation, and validation took place directly with the national contact point of each country.
