Abstract
Implicit Conditioning: A Decolonial Reframing of Cognitive Dissonance
By Christian ZacaTechO Ortiz
This study dismantles the Western psychological framework of “cognitive dissonance” and rearticulates it through a decolonial, intersectional lens as Implicit Conditioning, a systemic, neurological, and sociocultural training that programs individuals to protect dominance and resist justice. Rather than treating emotional discomfort as internal contradiction, this work reframes such responses as the conditioned reflexes of supremacy, encoded through colonial education, religious doctrine, media, trauma, and intergenerational reward systems.
Drawing on Afro-Indigenous cosmologies, trauma neuroscience, feminist decolonial theory, and testimonies from Global Majority communities, this framework exposes how dominant identities are not confused—they are trained. Emotional fragility, avoidance, denial, and defensiveness are shown not as moral failures but as engineered responses, embedded through centuries of patriarchal, ableist, cisnormative, and racialized programming. This study further interrogates the gendered labor of survival, revealing how women, femmes, and gender-expansive people bear the heaviest emotional and somatic costs of empire’s conditioning—while simultaneously carrying the ancestral blueprints for liberation.
By replacing cognitive dissonance with Implicit Conditioning, the study reclaims structural causality, invites embodied accountability, and offers a framework for real-time interruption, not just awareness. It challenges psychology, institutions, and justice movements alike to abandon euphemisms in favor of design-based decolonial interventions that rewire the emotional architecture of power. This is not a theory of discomfort. It is a roadmap for structural, neural, and cultural reconditioning toward collective liberation.
