Between Rebellion and Loyalty: Decisive Moments of Ukrainian History of the 17th and Early 18th Centuries in Modern Public Reception of Ukraine

This article investigates the modern digital reception of Ukrainian history of the 17th and early 18th centuries through content analysis of leading Ukrainian historical YouTube channels. Using statistical and network methods (CNA), the authors identify the most influential historical figures, events, and metaphors shaping collective memory. The results indicate the dominance of narratives about the Cossack state, the Pereiaslav Agreement, and figures such as Bohdan Khmelnytskyi and Ivan Mazepa. The study highlights how the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian war reshapes historical awareness and stimulates the “return of history” as a key metaphor of contemporary Ukrainian identity.
